Mission:

Horizons is an academic, cultural and recreational
enrichment program designed to encourage students
from a diverse, low-income population to realize their
full potential. Working in partnership with families,
Horizons is committed to the development of the
whole child through experiences that build
problem-solving skills, foster awareness of
community responsibility, instill respect for oneself
and others.  We strive for the student to have a
life-long interest in learning.
Academics:

We teach reading, writing and math.  However, since
the goal is for the students to excel, we'll adjust our
lessons to target the needs of the group.  If we hope
to bring about change in those we teach, we must be
willing and able to change how and what we teach, as
necessary.  We can't get locked into the path and
forget the destination.
Physical:

Swimming, basketball, tennis and just having some
fun are essential parts of our curriculum.  We want
our children to play some low-tech or no-tech games.
A measure of our success is seeing a students face
light-up when they succeed at something physical,
whether that is learning to swim, play tennis or
master that jump rope routine.
Social:

Social skills are honed in the classroom, on the field
of play or simply waiting in the lunch line.  It is key
that the students learn the art of social interaction,
which is why we include "Life Lessons" in the
classroom.  We want everyone to see the value of
building and protecting relationships.  A positive
attitude and approach can make all the difference in
determining the success of any endeavor that these
young people choose to undertake.  The possibilities
are limitless.

NATIONALS SUMMER PROGRAM EVALUATION
Accountability is stressful, but absolutely essential.  The anxiety level increased for the
Horizons Savannah faculty leading up to Nationals visit.  The faculty wanted to make sure
the program was running the way they knew it should be.  When Leslie Littlejohn (
Board of
Trustees Member for Horizons National
) arrived she put everyone at ease with her
pleasant and passionate approach.  The faculty was free to do what they are well trained to
do.

Ms. Littlejohn discussed with Tom Oxnard and Gail MacPherson the local Board of
Directors vision for the program and its management.  Then Ms. Littlejohn visited in the
classrooms, the computer lab and the pool.  Her observations and advice were welcome
and greatly appreciated.

The faculty taught with control; the student participated without chaos.  Learning was fun
for the students and the paperwork was in order!  Ms. Littlejohn even made a generous
donation for additional books!  Thank you Ms. Littlejohn for helping Horizons Savannah be
a better program.  Thank you Horizons Savannah faculty and students for making the
program a big success and for being really cool people!

HORIZONS NATIONAL - 2009 YEAR END CONFERENCE
Well, look who just had to have their picture taken with the
Horizon Savannah Executive Director Gail MacPherson!

That's right, "NBC Nightly News" anchor and managing editor,
Brian Williams kept asking if he could have his photo taken with
Gail until it became embarrassing.  She finally said okay and
made the guys day.
At least that's how Gail tells it.

Actually, Mr. Williams' wife, Jane Stoddard Williams,  is a board
member for Horizons National.  Both of the Williams' are very
active supporters of the Horizons program.  Mr. Williams was
gracious enough to pose for photos during the conference.

In addition to the affiliate Executive Directors giving their summer
program reports, there were meetings and workshops geared
towards the continued success of Horizons.  Find the mistakes
and fix them, find the successes and replicate them.

With everyone's help, the program will continue to make a
difference for decades to come.
