The pool and swimming are integral components of the Horizons summer program. Horizons Savannah is thankful that the Elks Lodge (Lodge 183) of Savannah has been providing access to their facilities for the benefit of our students and this community the past several years. We see our young people gaining confidence and exceeding their own expectations. The pool offers great lessons in overcoming fear, persevering through difficult tasks and removing self-imposed limits. Of course, it's a lot of fun too and beats doing classwork!

In the gym, the activities include kickball, basketball, football, jump-rope and dancing. Dancing? Yes dancing, and the guys are doing the teaching! There are also some who will just sit in the stands and exercise the opportunity to text each other despite sitting right next to one another.

Now this event was a lot of fun. It was quite the workout for the students as well as the faculty. What a great opportunity for the students to be outside burning energy and having a good time with the different competitions. They really did not want to stop but the day had to end. Besides, the faculty would have needed medical attention had they stayed on the field much longer. The cookouts are always a welcome break from the normal lunches. Mind you, Horizons Savannah is very grateful to the city of Savannah for the lunches that they provide. The city's generosity and commitment to the youth of Savannah is commendable and a great benefit to the Horizons summer program. However, young people being who they are, hot dogs and hamburgers still rule!
