We are at our best when things are at their worst.
This can be said of those who are willing to place personal needs
second to a greater need.  Horizon's Savannah has experienced
this first hand during these economically trying times.  Not only
have the sponsors continued to donate and support this program,
but individuals have stepped up to invest of themselves.

The returning teachers, counselors and volunteers show a depth
of character that is uncommon or at least unappreciated.  They
deserve recognition and compensation, but are not motivated by
either, especially since their pay is incommensurate for the work
required.  This is commitment.  This is dedication.  This is the
faculty of Horizons Savannah Summer Program.

This year we had a new teacher who  offered her services without
pay.  She is a skilled person who has bills just like the rest us, but
desires to be part of a team that is devoted to making a difference.
Sacrifice is a byproduct of worthwhile endeavours.

The budget didn't allow for additional teacher positions, although
they are needed for continued growth.  Ms. MacPherson was
contacted by a family friend in South Africa.  The friends daughter,
Taryn-Lee, is a first grade teacher in Cape Town South Africa.
Taryn-Lee had spent some time on the Horizons Savannah
Website and wanted to volunteer for the summer program.  After
Ms. MacPherson did a telephonic interview, received the
necessary certification and other paperwork, she welcomed the
new first grade teacher!  Taryn-Lee traveled to the United States,
at her own expense, for the express purpose of being part of this
program as a
volunteer  teacher!

There were also Counselors going out of their way to return to the
Horizons program.  High school or college, the counselors and
volunteers are making arrangements to be part of this program.
The Horizons students are a worthy cause.

Let us all do our best so that these young students have an
opportunity to do their best.

opportunity for development accorded the individual."
